Meet Tom

Tom Chaney is the Wealth Advisor at the Carson Wealth offices in El Paso and Las Cruces.

He provides clients with objective financial advice to help them navigate life’s major decisions, capture opportunities and avoid costly mistakes.

Over multiple decades of experience, Tom has developed and refined a process that helps his clients work toward thriving in retirement rather than merely surviving. He wants all his clients to feel confident about their financial situations as they move closer to their goals.

After attending New Mexico State University, Tom began his career working for his father as an insurance agent, specializing in working with the military and federal employees. During this time, he was recognized as “Agent of the Year” for a global insurance carrier. However, he realized that wasn’t the right path for him. He formed his own business and functioned as an independent financial consultant.

Throughout his career, Tom has enjoyed working with clients as a registered representative for numerous broker-dealers – but working in a sales or commission-based practice always created an inner conflict of interest. In 2010, he began the process of transitioning his financial planning firm from a commission-based structure to a fee-based system – acting in a fiduciary capacity for clients was his ultimate goal.

Outside of work, you can find Tom enjoying time with his wife on their four acres that they’re trying to turn into a self-sufficient, organic and zero-carbon homestead. They grow pecans, raise chickens, garden and enjoy the country lifestyle.

Tom and his wife are active in CASI, the Chili Appreciation Society International. They compete against each other and other chili cooks at various events held throughout the country, raising money for charities.
